28mm Sci Fi Project, Pt II - Pig Iron Heavy Infantry Painting

Before painting this force, as usual I decided to get a test-figure out of the way to make sure I was happy with the planned scheme. As you'll see below, these Pig Iron miniatures paint up really nicely and have some well defined detail without being too busy. Since these figures will be played with in a unit, I didn't want to go overboard on the paint job, shooting for a tabletop standard with minimal effort.

See the image annotations for the steps I used to paint this test figure below - I will be using the same steps to complete the rest of his unit.

Mounted on a 20mm MDF base, the tab is covered with a mix of spackle and sand for ground texture. The figure is primed with a light gray and then given a zenithal dusting from above with white.

The base is given a basecoat of Scale75 Brown Gray, then dry brushed with VGC Stonewall Gray. The uniform portion is given a basecoat of Vallejo 337 German Highlight, then spotted pure with a pure white using a sponge for the camo effect. The boots are painted Vallejo 70.822 German Black Brown.

The armor is base coated with Vallejo 70.920 German Uniform, then dry brushed lightly with Scale75 Graphite to add a cool blue effect and bring out some detail. It's followed by another light dry brush of the VGC Stonewall Gray used previously just on the most prominent edges.

Packs & gear are base coated with both Vallejo 70.871 Leather Brown and Vallejo 315 Light Mud.

His weapon is base coated with Vallejo 70.862 Black Grey, with the German Uniform used previously as the accent color. Vallejo 70.815 Basic Skintone is used for the face.

The armor, weapon, packs, and skin are given a homemade black/brown wash to bring out the detail. Red is applied to his helmet lens, and some simple highlighting on the accent of his weapon is done with it's original base color. A simple yet effective paint job.
Standing around waiting for the rest of his friends!
